Compliance checks, product categories and Prop 65
The 14 product and packaging laws Packtally checks against what a Shopify brand sells, product categories, the Prop 65 warning block, and rules outside the US.
In short: Beyond packaging EPR, Compliance checks 14 product and packaging laws that often catch Shopify brands, against what you sell, how it's packed and where it ships. Each item says what to do or what to confirm, links its source, and marks a due date where there is one. The checks come with every plan, including Free.

Packaging EPR for each state you owe in appears on the same list, linked to its report. Switch between Needs attention and Everything to see what's been checked. Laws are summarized as of the date shown from the sources linked. Packtally checks your data against them; it isn't legal advice, and some state rules have exceptions it can't see.
Product categories
Some laws depend on what you sell. On Set up, Product categories:
- Sort your product types into categories such as clothing, footwear, bags, home textiles, cosmetics, cookware, cleaning, baby and kids', food and supplements, candles and home goods, jewelry, and electronics with batteries. Packtally suggests a category from each type, title and tags; accept the suggestions if they look right.
- Answer two questions per category: any intentionally added PFAS (yes, no or not sure), and whether any products need a Prop 65 warning. Ask your suppliers if you're not sure; a written statement from them is the record you keep.
- Set the Prop 65 warning for categories that need one: the chemical to name, from your supplier's test results, and what it's known to cause. Packtally shows the short form for small labels too.
Prop 65 warnings on your store
California asks online sellers to show the warning on the product page or before checkout, not only on the package. On the Exempt plan and up, Packtally gives you a theme block that shows the warning you set on just the products in those categories. Press Update my store now to save your warnings, then Add the warning block to my product page, which opens Shopify's theme editor with the block ready to place. The block works on Online Store 2.0 themes (Dawn and most themes since 2021). On an older theme, add the warning text to your product description instead.
This is the one thing Packtally writes to your store: your warning text, saved as app data your theme reads. It never changes products, orders or your theme files.
Outside the US
Outside the US lists the countries your orders went to this year, with how many orders and about how much packaging, and the packaging rules that may apply there: likely applies, may apply or unlikely to apply. It covers the EU countries, the United Kingdom, Australia and Mexico, and Canada province by province. Each has a summary, the steps to look into, any thresholds and the sources. Packtally doesn't file outside the US; this shows what to look into.
Ask your suppliers
One email gets you most of what these laws ask for. Compliance has a ready-to-send supplier request for Toxics in Packaging certificates, PFAS statements, Prop 65 answers and the materials behind any recyclable claim. See suppliers and documents.
