Reissue vs Tern vs SecondLoop: a Tern alternative for Shopify trade-ins

Looking for a Tern or SecondLoop alternative? Reissue runs trade-ins online and in Shopify POS with native store credit, from a free plan. Checked Nov 2026.

Short answer: Reissue runs trade-ins on your website and at the Shopify POS register in one app, pays native Shopify store credit the customer can spend on the same sale, and starts free, with 100 trade-ins a month for $79 against $299 for 100 on Tern's Standard plan. For a shop that takes trade-ins at the counter and online, Reissue is our pick. Tern is the established pick for an online-only program installed today, and SecondLoop (HZNG) is a consignment and rental app.

Disclosure: We make Reissue, which is launching soon (in Shopify App Store review now, so it has no reviews yet). Details for the other apps come only from their Shopify App Store listings, checked November 3, 2026 (we could not open Tern's own website), and "Not stated" means a listing doesn't mention it.

Why stores choose Reissue

  • One app for the counter and the website. A trade-in page in your theme and a Trade-ins tile in Shopify POS (find the item by search, barcode or past purchases) feed one record. The tile is on the Free plan.
  • Credit the customer spends today. Native Shopify store credit lands on the customer's account and works at checkout online and in Shopify POS, so a trade-in at the register can pay for the same sale.
  • Tennessee tax only on the difference. At the register, like-kind credit goes on the matching cart line, so tax is charged only on the difference.
  • Postage only for boxes that ship. Approving a mail-in buys a prepaid return label that is billed after the carrier's first scan. Unused labels are voided when an offer expires, and you set a monthly cap.
  • Pay only for what arrives as described. Nothing is paid before inspection, and a lower grade needs the seller's yes.
  • Consignment without refund surprises. Consignors are paid after your return window, so a return never pays out (Starter and up).
  • Secondhand records and holds built in. The Nashville and Davidson County rule keeps listings in draft for the 15-day hold and keeps a register for 3 years (Starter and up). Other places aren't covered yet.
  • Pre-owned listings in one click, at real cost. An accepted item becomes a draft pre-owned product with condition, SKU and the credit paid as its cost, so margins stay true.

At $149, Reissue Pro includes 300 trade-ins a month, against 100 on Tern's $299 Standard plan, and extra trade-ins cost $1 rather than $3.00 or $2.50. Postage is billed only once a label is scanned.

When Tern or SecondLoop might fit better

  • Tern Trade-in has been on the App Store since August 6, 2021, rated 5.0 from 10 reviews (November 3, 2026), and you can install it today. Its Pro plan restocks against the original SKU and adds scheduled reports and an Advanced Trade-in Offers service, and it works with Slack, Google Analytics and webhooks as well as Shopify Flow.
  • SecondLoop (HZNG), listed since May 8, 2026 and rated 5.0 from 1 review, does pay-per-day rentals with a prepaid balance, consigner phone apps on Connect and a Dutch interface. Reissue doesn't offer rentals.

Questions

What's the best alternative to Tern?

For a shop that takes trade-ins at a Shopify POS counter as well as online and pays in native store credit, we recommend Reissue: it starts free and includes 100 trade-ins for $79. It's launching soon, in App Store review now. For online trade-ins on the smallest budget, Second Loop starts free too. Brand resale platforms such as Trove, Archive and Recurate run managed resale programs for brands, a different model we didn't compare here.

Is Tern Trade-in worth $299 a month?

For a brand with steady online trade-in volume that values a proven app and Tern's offer service, it can be. Shops doing a few dozen trade-ins a month will pay less with Reissue or Second Loop, and Reissue adds the Shopify POS register.

Is SecondLoop a trade-in app?

SecondLoop by HZNG is a consignment and rental app: donors bring items in and earn Shopify store credit when they sell or rent. Its listing doesn't mention trade-ins. Second Loop by Matt Burnett is the trade-in app.

Does Tern work with Shopify POS?

Tern's App Store listing doesn't mention Shopify POS. It lists team roles for in-store or online use. If counter trade-ins matter to you, ask Tern directly, or look at Reissue, which has a Trade-ins tile in Shopify POS on every plan.
