Reissue
Trade-ins for store credit, resold as pre-owned
Reissue is being built so a Shopify store's customers can trade in things they own for store credit, online or at the counter, and so the store can turn what comes in into pre-owned listings with one click.

What we're building
A reissue is a record pressed again for a second run. That's what happens to every traded-in item: it comes back, gets checked, and goes out to a new owner. We're building it for US specialty shops that sell in store and online, and testing it first in our own store.
-
Trade-ins from order history
Signed-in customers pick an item they bought from the store, answer a few condition questions, and see an instant "up to" offer in store credit. Stores can also accept brands they didn't sell.
-
Guided photos, checked on the spot
A short shot list for each category: front, back, the size tag and any flaws. Blurry or wrong photos get a retake prompt while the customer is still on the page.
-
Review and approve in one click
The store sees the photos, the answers, the original order and the offer math, with notes on anything worth a second look. Approve, adjust the offer, ask for more photos, or decline.
-
Prepaid labels on approval
Approving sends the customer a prepaid return label, sized for the item, or drop-off instructions. Scan-based labels mean postage is only charged when the box actually ships.
-
Receive, inspect, credit
Scan the box, check the item next to the customer's photos, and confirm the grade. Store credit goes out only after inspection, straight onto the customer's account.
-
Native Shopify store credit
Credit lands as a balance on the customer's account that shows at checkout, online and in Shopify POS, not a code to lose. Stores on legacy customer accounts get gift cards instead.
-
Trade-ins at the counter
A Shopify POS tile: find the customer, pick the item, choose the condition, and put the credit on their account so they can spend it in the same sale. Drop-offs from online trade-ins check in here too.
-
One-click pre-owned listings
An accepted item becomes a draft pre-owned product: photos, size, condition, a description in the store's own voice and a suggested price, added to a Pre-owned collection.
-
Trade-up on the product page
A product page block: "Own a pair? Get up to $40 in credit toward these." And on new products, "Also available pre-owned" when a traded-in one is for sale.
-
Proof it pays, in dollars
Every month: credit issued, credit spent, sales on orders that used trade-in credit, and resale revenue, so the program's return is a number, not a guess.
Made for specialty shops on Shopify that sell in store and online: boots, hats and western wear first, then outdoor gear, instruments and bikes. Credit only at first; Reissue won't buy items for cash.
How a trade-in works
| Step | The customer | The store |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Offer | Picks an item, answers condition questions, sees an "up to" credit offer with any shipping fee shown | Sets the rules once: what's accepted, condition percentages, caps and any credit bonus |
| 2. Photos | Takes the guided photos on their phone and submits | Gets the trade-in in an inbox, sorted by value and age |
| 3. Approve | Gets a prepaid label or drop-off instructions by email | Reviews and approves, adjusts, asks for photos or declines |
| 4. Receive | Ships the box or drops it at the store, and gets status emails | Scans it, inspects it against the photos and confirms the grade |
| 5. Credit | Sees the credit on their account, ready at checkout | Relists the item as pre-owned in one click, or records it as donated or recycled |
Questions stores ask
How do I set up a trade-in program on Shopify?
Decide what you'll accept, how you'll grade condition, what each grade is worth in credit, and who pays shipping. Then you need a way for customers to submit items, a way to send labels, an inspection step, and a way to issue credit. Without an app, that's a form, a shipping account and manual store credit. Reissue is being built to run all of it in one place. Our trade-in program guide walks through each decision.
Can I give store credit on Shopify?
Yes. Shopify has native store credit that shows as a balance on the customer's account and can be used at checkout online and in Shopify POS. It works on stores using new customer accounts; stores on legacy customer accounts usually use gift cards instead. Reissue issues native store credit where it's available and gift cards where it isn't.
Who pays shipping on a trade-in?
It's the store's choice. A common setup is a prepaid label with a small flat fee taken off the credit, and no fee for dropping the item off in store. Reissue will show any fee on the offer before the customer submits.
When does the customer get their credit?
After the store receives and inspects the item. Paying credit at approval risks paying for items that never arrive or don't match the photos. If the item isn't as described, the customer gets a new offer to accept or decline.
Can customers trade in at the counter?
Yes. Reissue is being built with a Shopify POS tile so staff can take a trade-in at the register and put the credit on the customer's account in the same visit, so it can be spent on the spot.
Does Reissue buy items for cash?
No. Reissue starts with store credit only. Credit is what brings customers back, and buying used goods for cash can fall under local secondhand dealer rules.
When can I use Reissue?
It's in development and being tested in our own store first. Write to us for early access and we'll tell you as soon as it's ready to try. Pricing will be published before it opens to stores; a free plan is planned.
