Shopify SEO checklist for 2026
A practical Shopify SEO checklist for 2026: search listings, descriptions, alt text, collection intros, structured data, broken links and AI readiness.
Short answer: Connect Google Search Console, fix your search titles and meta descriptions, replace thin or copied product descriptions, add alt text, write collection intros, add structured data, fix broken links with redirects, and make sure AI crawlers can read your store. Then measure, and repeat for new products.
Foundations
- Connect Google Search Console and submit your sitemap (Shopify generates it at /sitemap.xml). Add Bing Webmaster Tools too.
- Set your home page title and meta description in Online Store, Preferences. It's what Google shows when people search your store's name.
- Check indexing: Search Console's pages report shows which pages Google hasn't indexed and why.
Every product and collection
- Search titles of about 60 characters that say what the page sells.
- Meta descriptions of about 160 characters that make the click worth it. Preview them with our search listing preview tool.
- Original product descriptions, not supplier copy or one line.
- Alt text for every photo. See alt text for Shopify.
- Collection intros: a short paragraph so a collection page isn't just a grid.
Store-wide
- Structured data for products, breadcrumbs, your organization, shipping and returns. See product structured data.
- Broken links and redirects: fix links to deleted pages and redirect old addresses. See fixing broken links.
- Hide low-value pages such as tag pages and internal search results from Google.
- AI readiness: let AI crawlers in and give products what assistants need. See getting recommended by ChatGPT.
Then measure
Watch clicks, impressions and average position in Search Console for the pages you changed, compared with the weeks before. Changes usually take a couple of weeks to show.
