llms.txt for Shopify stores: what it is and whether you need it

What an llms.txt file is, what it should contain for a Shopify store, what search engines have said about it, and where it fits next to the things that matter more.

Short answer: llms.txt is a plain text summary of your site for AI assistants, listing your main collections, products, pages and policies. It's quick to add and can't hurt, but Google has said its search doesn't use it, and the major AI crawlers rarely request it. Do it after the basics that matter more: crawler access, real product content and structured data.

What it is

A file at yourstore.com/llms.txt, written in simple Markdown, that points AI tools to your most useful pages with a line about each. Think of it as a sitemap written for AI.

What to put in it for a store

  • One or two sentences on what your store sells and who it's for.
  • Your main collections, with a line each.
  • Key products or best sellers.
  • Shipping, returns and contact pages.
  • Prices only if you're happy for them to be quoted; leave them out for wholesale or login-only pricing.

What search engines have said

Google's guidance says its search doesn't use special AI text files like llms.txt. Server logs studied in 2026 showed the major AI crawlers rarely fetching the file. That could change, which is why adding one is a reasonable extra.

What matters more

  1. Let AI crawlers read your store.
  2. Write real product descriptions and answer common questions.
  3. Add structured data.
  4. Earn mentions on other sites.

All four are covered in how to get recommended by ChatGPT.
