How to get your Shopify store recommended by ChatGPT and AI assistants
What AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini need before they recommend a Shopify store, and the steps to get your products named in their answers.
Short answer: AI assistants recommend stores they can read, understand and trust. Let their crawlers into your store, give every product a real description, price, photos, category and barcode, answer common questions on product pages, mark it all up with structured data, and earn mentions on other sites. Then ask the assistants your shoppers' questions to see whether you come up.
How AI assistants pick what to recommend
When a shopper asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot for a product, the assistant usually searches the web, reads a handful of pages and summarizes what it found. It can only recommend stores whose pages it could reach and understand, and it leans on pages that answer the question clearly and on what other sites say.
Six steps
1. Let AI crawlers in
Each assistant sends its own bot to read websites. If your robots.txt or a firewall blocks them, those assistants can't see your products. Check your store's robots.txt (in Shopify, it's generated from the robots.txt.liquid template) and make sure you aren't blocking the bots you want to be found by.
2. Write real product descriptions
Copied supplier text or a single line gives an assistant nothing to work with. Describe what the product is, who it's for, what it's made of, sizes and how it compares, in your own words.
3. Fill in the product facts
AI shopping answers need a photo, a price, a category and, for branded goods, a barcode (GTIN, UPC or EAN). Set Shopify's standard product category so assistants know exactly what you sell.
4. Answer common questions on the page
Add a short FAQ to product pages: sizing, materials, care, shipping. Assistants often quote direct answers to the questions shoppers ask.
5. Mark it up with structured data
Structured data states your prices, stock, reviews, shipping and return terms in a form machines read reliably. See product structured data for Shopify.
6. Earn mentions elsewhere
Assistants weigh what other sites say: gift guides, comparison articles, local press, forums. Being included in honest roundups in your niche helps more than anything you say about yourself.
Check whether it's working
Ask ChatGPT and other assistants the questions your shoppers would ask, such as "best leather hat shop in Nashville" or "durable waxed canvas tote", and note which stores they name. Repeat monthly, since answers change. An llms.txt file can help assistants find your key pages, but major search engines haven't confirmed they use it, so treat it as an extra. See llms.txt for Shopify.
