Is there a time clock in Shopify POS?
Shopify POS credits sales to staff but has no built-in time clock as of October 2026. How shops track hours and what a good time clock needs.
Short answer: Not as of October 2026. Shopify POS records which staff member is logged in and credited for a sale, but it doesn't clock staff in and out or total their hours. Shops use a paper timesheet, a separate time clock app or tablet, or a time clock app that runs on the POS itself.
What Shopify POS does track
- Staff accounts and PINs, with permissions for what each person can do.
- Which staff member is credited on a sale, which shows up in staff sales reporting.
What it doesn't do is record shifts: clock-in and clock-out times, breaks, total hours or overtime.
How shops track hours today
| Method | Works well | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Paper timesheet | Free, nothing to set up | Rounding, forgotten punches, retyping into payroll |
| Separate time clock app or tablet | Accurate times, payroll exports | Another device and login; staff list kept twice |
| Time clock on the POS | Same device staff already use; hours next to sales | Check it supports your POS plan and devices |
What a good time clock needs
- A PIN per person, so one employee can't clock in another.
- Breaks recorded separately from shifts.
- Edits with a record: a manager can fix a missed punch, and the original time is kept.
- Pay period totals and overtime, ready to export to payroll.
- Hours next to sales, so you can see sales per labor hour by day and by person.
Overtime and break rules vary by state. Set the time clock to the rules where your store is, and keep records for as long as your state requires.
