How to track sales commissions on Shopify POS

Shopify POS credits sales to staff but doesn't calculate commissions. How to set up a commission plan and work out payouts from Shopify's staff sales data.

Short answer: Shopify POS credits each sale to a staff member, and POS Pro can credit individual line items, but it doesn't calculate commissions as of October 2026. Most shops export sales by staff member each pay period, subtract returns, and apply their commission rates in a spreadsheet. A commissions app does the same math continuously.

Step 1: Make sure every sale is credited

  • Each employee logs in with their own PIN.
  • Staff are assigned to the sale before checkout, especially when one person helps a customer and another rings them up.
  • On POS Pro, credit line items to the right person when a sale is shared.

Commission math is only as good as attribution. Spot-check it weekly at first.

Step 2: Choose a simple plan

PlanHow it worksGood for
Flat rateA fixed percentage of net sales, such as 3 percentSmall teams, easy to explain
TieredA higher rate once sales pass a monthly goalRewarding top sellers
By categoryDifferent rates for high-margin or slow-moving itemsSteering sales toward margin

Step 3: Decide the rules that cause arguments

  • Returns: is commission taken back when an item is returned, and within what window?
  • Discounts: is commission paid on the discounted price? It usually should be.
  • Gift cards, tax and shipping: usually excluded from commissionable sales.
  • Shared sales: split, or credit to one person?

Step 4: Work it out each pay period

  1. Export sales by staff member for the period from Shopify's reports.
  2. Subtract returns credited to each person, using your return rule.
  3. Remove gift cards, tax and shipping if your plan excludes them.
  4. Apply the rate or tiers and record the payout next to each person's hours.

Share each person's numbers with them before payday. A visible leaderboard or goal tracker tends to matter more to staff than the rate itself.
